Principal Engineer for Smart Grid

Clay Burns earned BSEE and MSEE degrees from Lehigh University, and is a licensed Professional Engineer in NYS. He has worked in both the steel and utility industries over the last 33 years. Since 1983, Clay has been involved with many of the technical aspects of the utility business including, generation, T&D, electric research, power quality, and complex metering. He began working on National Grid's smart metering and smart grid efforts in 2006.
About National Grid's Smart Technology Center
The National Grid Smart Technology Center (STC), is located at 7437 Henry Clay Boulevard, Liverpool, NY, 13088 with convenient facility access via the NYS Thruway Exit 37: Electronics Parkway. The activities at this facility are an essential component of the company's comprehensive Smart Grid vision and strategy. The STC resides on a five acre site as part of the overall Regional Operations Center (ROC) in Liverpool, NY. This operations site is the ideal location for the STC as many of the necessary supporting components currently reside and are fully operational at this site including; a "State of the Art" ISO 9001 Registered - Calibration & Testing Engineering Laboratories, Electric & Gas Meter Laboratories, Electric & Gas Field Personnel Training Facilities, Energy Management System (EMS) Operations, Fleet Maintenance, a communications tower and 34.5 kV substation. This comprehensive utility operations center gives the STC the capabilities required to perform a wide range of testing and evaluation of smart grid technology offerings.
