Every student pursuing the nanoscale science bachelor's degree must complete the University General Education Requirements, as stated in the Undergraduate Bulletin. To facilitate this, the nanoscale science requirements are structured so that each student automatically fulfills the following General Education Requirements within the nanoscale science major:
Natural Science (six credits)
Both writing requirements: lower and upper level (two courses)
Oral discourse (one course)
Information Literacy (one course)
Half the social science requirements (three credits)

1. The General Education program features some courses that will fulfill two requirements simultaneously: for example, Arts and Europe, or Humanities and Europe; nanoscale science students are encouraged to seek out these courses in order to maximize completion of requirements, which may then allow the student additional electives. The students are encouraged to discuss this and obtain a list of these courses that fulfill two requirements from their advisor or the CNSE Office of Student Services.
2. The foreign language requirement may be satisfied in the following ways: the satisfactory completion of the second college semester (i.e., level elementary II) of foreign language study or its equivalent; or passing a Regents "Checkpoint B" Examination or a Regents-approved equivalent with a score of 85 or above; or demonstration of competency in a language other than English, including languages not currently offered for formal instruction at this university; or satisfactory completion of at least one college semester in a study abroad program in a country where English is not the primary language of instruction (from the Undergraduate Bulletin).
