Times Union: The Buzz: Less is more in nanoworld

Last week, GlobalFoundries said it is planning a new technology development facility at Luther Forest Technology Center in Malta, site of its $7 billion computer chip factory.

It will include a 90,000-square-foot clean room. Although the company hasn't said much, it is believed the clean room would be used for pilot manufacturing of cutting-edge technologies — some of which are being developed at the University at Albany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering along with its R&D partner, IBM.

That clean room is nearly twice the size of the NanoCollege's new clean room under construction at the NanoFab X building off Interstate 90.

But NanoFab X is designed to house equipment that processes 450 millimeter silicon wafers to make chips, instead of the 300mm wafers that are standard at today's factories, including the one in Malta...

Or maybe the color of money

The University at Albany's official colors are purple and gold, and so far as we can tell, the NanoCollege has used the same color scheme in its own branding.

But the NanoCollege has a separate budget from UAlbany.

So why doesn't the NanoCollege come up with its own colors and mascot?
