I'm the parent of a SUNY student, so I have a much different take on the SUNY budget than Fred Barney (letter, Oct. 27).

Perhaps he doesn't understand the whole SUNY budgetary picture, including its major funding sources. Out of the university system's $10.7 billion all-funds budget in 2008-2009, total state support for instructional programs was a little more than $1.5 billion.
