The SUNY College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) provided more than 300 middle- and high-school students from across upstate New York with an inside look at the exciting world of nanotechnology when it held its popular NanoCareer Day at CNSE’s Albany NanoTech Complex on May 15.

NanoCareer Day is designed to help prepare students for a growing number of nanotechnology-related careers in the Capital Region and New York State, while also addressing the critical national need to stimulate students’ interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. NanoCareer Day included presentations by CNSE faculty on the emerging science of nanotechnology and the career opportunities it offers; hands-on demonstrations explaining the applications of nanotechnology research and development; and tours of CNSE’s world-class Albany NanoTech Complex, a $14 billion megaplex that is the most advanced in the academic world.

The National Science Foundation projects the need for 2 million nanotechnology-savvy workers by 2014, with 20 percent expected to be scientists and the remaining 80 percent consisting of highly skilled engineers, technicians, business leaders, economists and others, with expertise ranging from two-year associate degrees to doctoral degrees.
