Parents unsure about kids' digital media use
Educators may need to show parents how valuable digital media skills are for today's learners. American parents agreed by a wide margin that digital media skills are important to kids' success in the 21st century, but they also expressed skepticism about whether digital media could contribute to the development of skills such as communicating, working with others, and establishing civic responsibility, according to a new national poll from Common Sense Media and the Joan Ganz Cooney Center. Radiation is a treatment therapy that is often used in the battle against cancer. Unfortunately, the therapy is sometimes limited because certain cancer cells are resistant to ionizing radiation. Recently, a nanotech approach to overcoming the resistance of some cancer cells to radiation therapy has been successfully tested in mice. "Open Innovation of Nanotechnology in the Adjacent Markets of Transportation, Energy and Security" was the theme of CIRCA '08, a conference designed to present unique strategies for development of nanofabrication technology platforms and to identify related teaming opportunities around industry-compliant manufacturing solutions. During the conference the U.S. Army Research Laboratory and CNSE signed an agreement to create a new research partnership that is designed to accelerate the development and commercialization of nanotechnology-enabled sensors and electronic devices that will play a critical role in the U.S. Army's transition into a 21st-century fighting force. The Nanoscale Informal Science Education (NISE) Network brings researchers and informal science educators together to inform the public about nanoscience and technology. Now, through a new Web site, the NISE Network Resource Center, you can access a vast collection of educational resources and even join in this creative community effort.
For teachers, students, or anyone interested in nanoscience and the many potential nanotechnology applications, the Web site's content includes study materials, academic approaches, collections of graphics, a newsletter, links to other institutions working in the field, and much more.

It's been nearly a decade since the Glenn Commission produced Before It's Too Late, its visionary report on the state of science and mathematics education in the United States. The report described the infrastructure and activities needed to produce and sustain first-rate teachers of science and mathematics. Yet minimal progress has been made in implementing the commission's ideas on the scale that its members envisioned. The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA)-the world's largest organization of science educators-is taking action. With Senator John Glenn as Honorary Chair, NSTA is mounting a five-year, $43 million national effort to make excellence in science teaching and learning a reality for all U.S. students. Denzel Washington and his wife, Pauletta, recently visited his hometown of Mount Vernon in Westchester County to speak to students at Mount Vernon High School. While speaking at the high school, Washington stressed the importance of science saying that actors, rappers and basketball stars may get more recognition, but someone in a hospital bed is more impressed by a good doctor. Washington and his wife award annual scholarships for neuroscience research to college students. To read more, click here.
